Maria Camila Osorio is one of the most outstanding women in Colombia in the tennis world. She is not only a Colombian beauty but also a great athlete with exceptional achievements. We will tell you all the details you need to know about her sporting career.

The beginning of Maria Camila Osorio‘s professional career

Maria Camilais one of the most important Colombian females in  the sports world.   She comes from a family of athletes. Her grandfather, her father, and her brother played soccer professionally. Her mother, on the other hand, was a good basketball player.

Maria didn’t follow these paths.  She chose tennis. Her career began to gain notoriety at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. There, she won the bronze medal and the silver medal in the doubles category, together with her compatriot Nicola-s Mejia (El País, 2018). 

Thanks to that  tremendous performance, Maria Camila received an invitation to play in the main draw of the Bogota Open in 2019.  With just 17 years of age she reached the quarterfinals, which positioned her in a very relevant ranking since, at that time, she became number 333 in the world.  

That performance on a global scale would also allow her to excel in Colombia. By June 2019, she became Colombia’s number one tennis player in the prestigious WTA rankings. This achievement followed the retirement of the successful Mariana Duque (La Opinión, 2019).

It is essential to mention that Maria Camila still has a lot of potentials to perform. However, her current numbers are already impressive. For example, as of September 2021, she reached the highest position in the WTA, that is, she is at the 71st position, with more than 1000 points. 

Within Latin America, she is the second Latin American in the ranking. She only ranks behind Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska, but it is clear that Maria is Colombia’s top player. This ranking came after a most relevant achievement. We are talking about her first WTA title, obtained in 2021 (Infobae, 2021).

Maria Camila defeated the Slovenian Tamara Zidansek in the final game of the Bogota WTA Tournament, with partial results of 5-7, 6-3, and 6-4. Her first major title helped her gain momentum and consolidate herself as the best feminine exponent of Colombian  tennis (EFE, 2021). Undoubtedly, Maria Camila Osorio appears as an elite Colombian athlete. Her future is very promising, and she is likely to win many more relevant tournaments.
